Copperas treatment
Copperas (iron suflate) and also copper copperas have been used since the dawn of time for protecting log house walls. Copperas protects from the UV-light from the sun and prevents bugs from trying to get in the wood. Copperas also ages the wood faster by coloring the wood. Depending on the wood, the color is usually grey or yellow. This treatment is still used nowadays for coloring forest hideouts and for giving them a protective layer. Copperas is commonly seen as a listed ingredient on paint products such as red ocher.
When repairing old furniture, new wood can be aged with a copperas treatment. Copperas powder (found at a pharmacy) will dissolve into warm water. After the mix is suitable for use, it can be tested on a piece of wood. Sunlight will fasten the aging process. Before starting the job, it is recommended to test this so that you know what mixing ratio you will use. Check on the test subject for a few days.
Mild copperas mix:
n. 1tsp copperas and about ½ dl of water
Strong copperas mix:
n. 2 tblsp copperas and about ½ dl of water
When a suitable ratio is found, the copperas will cover roughly a 8-10m² area per liter.
