Different groove joints

Covered grooved joint, it is possible to cover the end of the grooved part with the tenon part. The effect in this case is only visual and the strength of the joint is weak. It will break from the grooved part.

Dovetail grooved joint is practical when it is not easy or not possible to glue the joint because it locks itself. It can be made along or across grains. Usually joints are designed so that both parts of the joint are equally strong. However in this case the grooved part is usually weakest.

Benefits and disadvantages

  • Good when used across grains joints. Then it should be glued only from one end because it allows the joint to move across grains.
  • The joint is not very strong because of the weakness of the grooved part.
  • The joint can be made invisible
